  1. Choose the Right Rug Size: The first step in placing a rug is selecting the appropriate size. A rug that's too small can make the room feel disjointed, while an oversized rug may overwhelm the space. Here's a general rule: allow for at least 8-24 inches between the edge of a rug and the wall, any less will make the rug look oversized for the space. When placing a rug in a living room, aim for the rug to be large enough that at least the front legs of your furniture can rest on it. In a dining area, ensure the rug accommodates both the table and chairs even when they're pulled out. In a bedroom, if placing a rug under the bed, you have several options. 1. Place the rug all the way under the bed and nightstands, ensuring that the feet of all furniture are placed on the rug. 2. Pull it forward just a touch and let the back edge of the rug land just in front of the nightstands. 3. Use the thirds rule - cover 1/3 to 2/3 of the floor underneath the bed with the rug, allowing a space for your feet to touch down when you climb out of bed in the morning.

  2. Determine the Rug's Purpose: Consider the function of the rug in the room. Do you want it to define an area, such as under a coffee table or dining table, or do you want it to cover a larger portion of the floor? Your choice will influence where you place the rug.

  3. Center the Rug: When placing a rug under a dining table or coffee table, make sure it's centered with the furniture. This creates a balanced and harmonious look. Use a measuring tape to ensure equal spacing on all sides. Make sure that your rug is large enough to accommodate your chairs even when they are pulled out all the way.

  4. Create Visual Symmetry: Achieve a visually pleasing arrangement by aligning the rug with other key elements in the room. For instance, if you have a fireplace or a prominent piece of artwork on one wall, align the rug with it to create symmetry.

  5. Layer Rugs for Depth: Layering rugs can add depth and texture to your decor. Start with a larger, neutral rug as the base and then layer a smaller, patterned or textured rug on top. This works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms. Also, layer an area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting! This is an easy way to refresh a space without going through the huge expense of replacing your flooring.

  6. Consider Traffic Flow: Take into account the flow of foot traffic in the room. Leave a comfortable margin of space between the edge of the rug and walls to avoid tripping hazards. In hallways, runners should be centered and parallel to the walls.

  7. Choose Rug Patterns and Colors Wisely: The pattern and color of your rug should complement your existing decor. If your furniture and walls have bold patterns or colors, opt for a more neutral rug to balance the visual appeal.

  8. Secure the Rug: To prevent slipping, use rug pads or grippers underneath the rug. This also helps to protect your floors.

  9. Maintain and Clean: Regularly vacuum and clean your rug according to its material and care instructions to keep it looking fresh and inviting. Some modern rugs are even machine washable! These rugs are very soft and wonderful under bare feet. However, they can be hard to vacuum, as they are very flexible and are easily sucked up into the vacuum.

  10. Experiment and Adjust: Don't be afraid to experiment with rug placement. It may take a few tries to find the perfect arrangement that suits your style and space. Be open to adjusting the rug's position until it feels just right.

Placing a rug in your home should be fun! So, don't stress. If it makes you happy, then, you've achieved the best result possible! By following these steps and trusting your instincts, you can elevate your home decor and create inviting, well-designed spaces that reflect your personal style. Remember that there are no strict rules in interior design, so feel free to let your creativity shine through as you play with different rug placements in your home.
